The last few hundred feet is not maintained and if you have low ground clearance you can damage your car,(but there is a small area you can park to aviod the worst) seen it happen. Just drive slow what's the hurry and resident's will thank you. It's a wash-board road so unless it's been graded recently it will be a rough ride, though any car can do this unless heavy rain has occurred. Turn on Tune RD(near airport) says private road but as long as you respect the speed limit of 25 MPH you should be OK. It is rugged, rocky, and narrow and requires good hiking shoes. The trek down to the waters edge from the rim of the gorge is not trivial. The pools are clothing optional and it is not uncommon to see both naked and clothed folks enjoying the warm water together. In the past we have seen 6-8 other people enjoying the warm water. My wife and I spent about and hour in the pools on a Sunday midday and saw no one but a couple fly fishermen in the distance. This day, it was also at 100 degrees but it often gets a feed from the river which cools it considerably. There is a smaller pool below the 100 degree pool that sits 1-2 (only about 12 inches deep) and is fed from the 100 degree pool. The second pool also seats about six, is 18-24 inches deep and is at 90 degrees (measured). It is about two feet deep which means when you’re sitting on the sandy bottom, it is neck high. The temperature was 100 degrees (measured). The largest sits six strangers comfortably – eight if you want to get cozy. There are three useable hot springs pools. I returned in early October 2012 when the Rio Grande River was low. Manby Hot Springs is an unspoiled treasure along the Rio Grande just north of Taos, NM. ![]()
